Wisconsin Governors

Wisconsin has had 44 governors since it became the 30th state to be admitted to the United State of America on May 29, 1848. The most common name for governors of the Badger State has been William. All the Williams were in office in the 19th century. The most uncommon name was that of Cadwallader Colden Washburn. His parents must have admired colonial governor Cadwallader Colden very much, although we found nothing saying they were related. Washburn had 3 brothers who were also active in politics but had less flamboyant names: William (Minnesota), Israel, governor of Maine from 1861-63; and Elihu, who was Ulysses S. Grant’s Secretary of State for 11 days in 1869, before becoming minister to France.
