Oklahoma Governors

Oklahoma entered the union on November 16, 1907 and was governed by 26 men up until 2011, when its first female governor, Mary Fallin, took office. The given name that tops the list for Oklahoma governors is David.

All of the governors’ names have been in the Top 1000 most popular American names, except Johnston who was the son of Alfalfa Bill Murray. He was named after his mother’s uncle, Douglas H. Johnston, Governor of the Chickasaw Nation.

Dewey F. Bartlett was born in 1919, when Dewey was the 205th most popular American male name. In 1898, Dewey was the 19th most popular male name. The 1937 appearance of Donald Duck’s nephews, Huey, Dewey and Louie, had no real impact on the name’s popularity. It continued to be a Top 500 American male name until 1966.
